In my last post, I talked about Joy Of Sex. A movie that starred Michelle Meyrink. So I thought I would keep the Meyrink train running with another pick that needs a dvd/blu ray release. Nice Girls Don't Explode.
Meyrink was one of my favorite actresses of the 80's She had a nice balance of beauty and quirk. She had supporting roles in hits like Valley Girl, Revenge Of The Nerds, The Outsiders, and Real Genius. In Genius, she stole every scene she was in. The films she headlined, Joy Of Sex and Nice Girls Don't Explode, failed to find an audience. Meyrink left acting in the late 80's to follow a Budhist lifestyle.
Nice Girls Don't Explode really plays up her quirky strengths. She plays a teen who believes that her hormones can cause spontaneous combustion. When she is aroused by a boy, things around her have a tendency to explode. Come to find out, it's her overprotective mother, Barbara Harris, causing the flames. Harris has enlisted the help of an arsonist, the great Wallace Shawn, to make her daughter feel like a pyromaniac. But when Meyrink reconnects with her childhood crush, William O'Leary, Harris and Shawn have their work cut out for them.
This is a fun little movie that nobody seems to remember. It's a hidden gem that really needs to resurface.
