Back in the 80's, director Penelope Spheeris became a voice for the punk movement in film. With films like Decline Of The Western Civilization and Suburbia, she proved that she could talk the talk of these angry youths. Spheeris would eventually find mainstream success with Wayne's World. Before that though, she helmed a forgotten little punk gem called Dudes.
Jon Cryer, Daniel Roebuck, and Flea play three east coast punks. Fed up with the New York scene, they decide to head west in hopes of a sunny future. En route, while camping in the desert, the three are brutally attacked by a group of rednecks, led by Lee Ving. Cryer and Roebuck go out for revenge. Looking the way they do, they know they want get far in the sleepy, desert town. They enlist the help of a tow truck driver, played by Catherine Mary Stuart, to help them adapt to a more cowboy lifestyle. They start to blend in, which helps them with their pursuit of the evil Ving and his crew.
I'm surprised this one isn't available yet on dvd/blu ray. With the success Cryer has had on Two And A Half Men and the following that Spheeris has it would be easy to market. I think it might be another soundtrack issue. With bands like Jane's Addiction and Megadeth on the soundtrack, the rights to the music could be pretty steep.
This is one that doesn't show up much today, but it's definately worth a look.
