Sometimes a movie is obscure because, well, it's just a bad movie. But some of these are worth a look just for curiosty sake. Listen To Me is one of those movies.
Why, you may ask, would a boring film about college debate be worth a look? Two words, Kirk Cameron. Before he became the poster boy for every other religious film, Kirk actually starred in two mainstream Hollywood films. The body switching movie Like Father, Like Son, and this one. It's like the opposite of when a Disney star tries to shed that image and does an R rated film. Long before headlining church funded films like Left Behind and Fireproof, he did this movie where he deabted abortion and had man cramps for Jami Gertz. Like I said, it's not a great movie, but it's kind of fun to watch against this image he has now. And if that doesn't put a smile on your face, his horrible southern accent and mullet will.
Cameron and Gertz are two star college debaters. Their coach, Roy Scheider, takes them under his wing. With his help, they land a huge opportunity to debate abortion in the Supreme Court. Romance blossoms between them as they prepare for this case. It plays out like a bad tv movie.
I really like Scheider, but he plays this coach way too slick. It's like he wasn't able to shake his Bob Fosse performance from All That Jazz. As far as Gertz goes, I've never been a huge fan. She's been in a lot of great films, but she doesn't have a lot of range. She must have had a great agent though. She was seriously in every other film of the 80's.
This movie is so boring, but if your curious to see bad boy Cameron, well as bad as he can be, check it out. It's not on dvd or blu ray, but I'm sure you could stumble across a plethora of vhs copy's at your local thrift shop. I did!
