Sometimes a great cast can elevate weak material. If you have the right actors, a so so script can become something enjoyable. Such is the case with today's movie Surrender.
Michael Caine is a succesful author who is unlucky in love. After two divorces that have wiped him out financially and emotionally, he is ready to give up on love. But when he is at a gala event that gets robbed, things begin to look up for him. The gala guests are forced to strip and are tied to one another. Caine is bound to a struggling artist, Sally Field, and the two have an instant chemistry. Caine lets Field think that he is poor to see if she is interested in him for more than money. Field is a little hesitant to jump into a relationship. She has a bad habit of dating overbearing men and is trying to get out of a relationship with a boorish jerk, played by our boy Steve Guttenberg. Caine and Field fall hard for one another, but when truths begin to surface, their courting takes a hit.
The screenplay is kind of silly and sitcom like, especially near the end. But Caine and Field are a lot of fun to watch. The supporting cast is game as well. Peter Boyle, Jackie Cooper, and Julie Kavner add a lot to their underwritten roles.
This one is hard to find, but if you are in the mood for a silly romance, you could do worse.
