I love when I see something totally original in a movie. Of course what I think is original, others might look at as silly. Rockula is a great example of this.
Dean Cameron, who was so good as Chainsaw in Summer School, takes center stage as Ralph, a 400 year old vampire who still lives at home with his mom, Toni Basil. You would think that being a vampire would be enough of a curse, but every 22 years on Halloween, he falls in love with Mona, Tawny Fere. And every 22 years she ends up murdered by a rhinestone peg legged pirate wielding a hambone. This year, he decides to stay in and avoid meeting her latest reincarnation. But on his way home from a bar one night, fate intervines and she hits him with his car and his feelings resurface. He decides to try and beat the curse and win her over from her jealous boyfriend, Thomas Dolby. With the help of his barmates, Susan Tyrell and Bo Diddley, he forms the band Rockula. They are an instant hit which helps Ralph gain some self confidence and win the girl.hoping to end the curse this time around.
It all sounds silly, and it is, but the cast is pretty terrific and it's a lot of fun. It also has a great soundtrack, but you would probably expect that from a movie with Basil, Dolby, and Diddley in it. Not available on dvd or blu ray, but it sometimes is streaming. If you want an hour and a half of mindless fun, you should check it out.
