I sometimes love going into a movie knowing little to nothing about it, especially if I end up loving it. Such is the case with 2009's Mystery Team. All I knew is that it starred Donald Glover and Aubrey Plaza, two actor's I enjoy the work of. I saw it streaming on Netflix a few years back and thought, "What the hell. I'll give it a shot." I'm so glad I did.

The Mystery Team is a trio of 18 year old men who have solved their small town mysteries since they were children. Jason, Donald Glover, is the master of disguise. Duncan, DC Pierson, is the brains. And Charlie, Dominic Dierkes, is the muscle. They became local celebrities as kids with their abilities to solve Encyclopedia Brown style cases, usually involving missing cats and stolen pies. But now that they are almost adults, and haven't really grown up, they are a bit of a joke. When a little girl, Daphne Ciccarelle, hires them to find out who murdered her parents, they take the case to prove to everyone that they are the real deal. Their quest leads them into a seedy underworld of gangsters, strippers, and sleazy low lifes. Something that the boys weren't prepared for.

This is one of the funniest movies I've seen in the last decade. Seriously, I laughed throughout. All three of the leads are very funny. I had know idea that they were a comedy team and internet sensation called Derrick Comedy. They wrote the screenplay with director Dan Eckman. It is very raunchy but doesn't rely on gross out humor like a lot of movies do today.

Mystery Team is a lot of goofy fun.

It's available on dvd and is streaming on Tubi TV this month.
