In my entry yesterday for Innocent Blood, I mentioned that John Landis was attempting to find the same success he had with An American Werewolf In London. This wasn't the first time he tried to copy an earlier hit and failed. He also did it with 1987's Amazon Women On The Moon.
Back in 1977, Landis had a huge cult hit on his hands with The Kentucky Fried Movie, a sketch parody movie. Ten years later, Landis was on a successful run with films like Spies Like Us and Three Amigos. He wanted to keep the gravy train running and turned to the format he used in Kentucky Fried. This time he would collaberate with other filmmakers to helm the different sketches. Joe Dante, Carl Gottlieb, Robert K. Weiss, and Peter Horton, yes that long haired guy from Thirtysomething, were the other directors on board.
They assembled a who's who of Hollywood A listers to come in and act in the sketches. Michelle Pfeiffer, Steve Guttenberg, Roseanne Arquette, Griffin Dunne, Carrie Fisher, Arsenio Hall, Ed Begley, Jr., Andrew Dice Clay, David Alan Grier, B.B. King, Kelly Preston, and Sybil Danning to name just a few.
The sketches parodied mostly movies and commercial that you would see on late night tv back in the 80's, with a 1950;s sci fi movie called Amazon Women On The Moon as the wrap around.

Here's the main problem with this movie, The Kentucky Fried Movie was so funny that any other film that is similar pales in comparison. That being said, this is the funniest of The Kentucky Fried Movie knockoffs. Movies like The Groove Tube, Tunnelvision, and Loose Shoes offered very few laughs. This one however had me laughing throughout. The best sketches include Monique Gabrielle as a Playboy centerfold who goes everywhere naked. A psa for Blacks Without Soul. Arsenio Hall as a man who has one mishap after another. Ed Begley, Jr. as The Son Of The Invisible Man who is visible but he doesn't know it. And of course, Amazon Women On The Moon.
You will probably enjoy this more if you haven't seen The Kentucky Fried Movie, but you'll laugh even if you have.
Available on dvd.
