I mentioned the other day that I am a huge fan of Jeff Goldblum. He has this nerdy, cool vibe with a delivery that is all his own. Even though he has starred in some huge blockbusters, like Independence Day and Jurassic Park, he's had his fair share of misses. I prefer the ones that didn't connect with audiences. One of those is 1985's Transylvania 6-5000.
Goldblum and Ed Begley, Jr. star as Jack and Gill, two tabloid reporters sent to Transylvania because there has been a sighting of Frankenstein's monster. Gill couldn't be more excited. Jack, a seasoned journalist who hates reporting fluff, is skeptical. Once there they not only come across Frankenstein's monster, but a sexy, female vampire, Geena Davis, a wolfman, Donald Gibb, a mad scientist, Joseph Bologna, and his hunchbacked assisitant, John Byner. Jack begins to believe they have a story, but the townsfolk don't want them getting too close to the truth.

This horror spoof was written and directed by longtime Mel Brooks collaborator Rudy De Luca. It definately has a Brooks feel to it. Goldblum and Begley make a good comedy team. De Luca originally wanted Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari, but the studio didn't feel like they were big enough names. De Luca also gathered a game supporting cast. Davis alone is worth the price of admission. Just check out that pic above...magnificent! Michael Richards, Carol Kane, Teresa Ganzel, Jeffrey Jones, and Norman Fell round out the cast. Kane is always wonderful and Richards steals his scenes as a bumbling bellhop. Watch his scenes with Goldblum and you can see Goldblum trying hard to keep a straight face.
A lot of people will think this is too silly, but it makes me laugh a lot.
Available on dvd.
