Soap operas were huge in the early 80's. And with their overly dramatic storylines and acting, they were a prime target for parody. TV icon Garry Marshall decided to tackle this with his debut feature, 1982's Young Doctors In Love.

Like with most soap operas, Young Doctors has different storylines taking place. The main one has Michael McKean as Dr. Simon August, an arrogant doc who claims that he will be the greatest surgeon of all time. There's one obsticle however, he can't stand the sight of blood. His girlfriend, Dr. Stephanie Brody, Sean Young, has a rare disease that requires his expertise, but his phobia could get in the way of saving her life.

Some of the other storylines include a doctor, Taylor Negron, romancing the head nurse, Pamela Reed, so he can get the keys to her pharmacy cabinet. There's also a mafiaso patient,Titos Vandis, who's being pursued by a hitman, Michael Richards. The mobster's son, Hector Elizondo, has to come in drag to visit his father so he won't be spotted by the hitman, drawing the attention and desire from a doctor, Patrick Collins.

Marshall brought on a lot of actors from his popular tv shows at the time. Mckean from Laverne And Shirley and Ted McGinley, Crystal Bernard, and Gary Friedkin from Happy Days. There's also a lot of seasoned pros like Dabney Coleman, Harry Dean Stanton, and Saul Rubinek rounding out the cast. He also has a lot of the biggest soap stars at the time making cameos that poke fun at their on screen personas.

This is a very funny spoof with a game cast and what I think is Marshall's best picture.

It's available on dvd.
