Still on a John Cassavetes/Peter Falk kick, I caught up with one of their collaborations that Cassavetes didn't write or direct. Elaine May's 1976 film Mikey And Nicky.

Knowing that he has a hit out on him, small time gangster Nicky, Cassavetes, turns to his life long friend and partner in crime Mikey, Falk, for help. Mikey is fed up with Nicky and his total lack of disrespect towards him and his constant screw ups. But he decides to take Nicky out on the town just to see how deep their friendship runs. All the while knowing that their is a hitman hot on their trail.

This is a terrific mob film and a great showcase for the two leads to show off their acting chops. When it was released, it tanked at the box office. May had turned in an epic film. She would just let the camera run constantly. The studio was upset and edited the film down, much to May's disapproval. When it opened, it was met with harsh criticism and very little distibution. In 1986, May was finally able to edit the film to her vision, which is the version that's available now.

I've never seen the theatrical version, but I really enjoyed May's film. A great mob/buddy film that was sadly overlooked.

It's available on dvd.
