The Crown International Pictures released in the mid 80's really made an effort to try and tell a story while still being true to their drive in roots. A good example of this is 1985's Tomboy.
Betsy Russell stars as Tommy Boyd, a female mechanic who has always dreamed of being a race car driver. She thinks she might get her big break when she starts dating top stock car driver Randy Starr, Jerry DiNome. But when Randy say's that it's a guy's sport, Tommy decides to prove him wrong.

This is a total girl power movie, and a pretty good one. But since it is a Crown International Picture, there is plenty of nudity. Kind of sends a mixed signal, but that's one of the things I love about their films. I think their heart is in the right place, but they also know their audience.
Betsy Russell is very winning as Tommy. It's a spunky, and sexy, performance. The rest of the cast is good as well, but this is Russell's picture and she owns it.

If you can get past the nudity, Tomboy is a sweet little film. It would be a great film for young women if it wasn't rated R.
It's available on dvd but out of print on blu ray. It's also streaming on Amazon Prime.
