I have been on a horror anthology kick lately, so I went back and revisited one that I haven't seen since the 90's, 1990's horror western Grim Prairie Tales.

A mild mannered city dweller, Brad Dourif, hits the open range to meet up with his wife who is tending to his sick mother. En route he sets up camp and meets a bounty hunter, James Earl Jones, who wants to share the campfire. He hesitantly agrees and slowly warms up to the stranger as the two share horror stories, trying to top one another.

This is a great anthology with two terrific leads. Both Dourif and Jones work well with one another and make a good team. This is kind of a blessing and a curse because their story is actually more entertaining then the stories they weave. That's not to say the stories aren't entertaining, it's just that the leads are that good. Especially Jones who sports a long wig and rotten teeth and seems to relish his part.

This was the debut of writer/director Wayne Coe. Surprisingly enough, he never did another feature. It would have been interesting to see what his follow up might have been. He has a lot of talent.

This is a clever western horror anthology aided greatly by it's two terrific leads.

Sadly it's unavailable on dvd or blu ray.
