1993's Philadelphia is always looked at as the first Hollywood movie to tackle the subject of the Aids epidemic. This really isn't the case however. 1988's Casual Sex? looked at Aids and safe sex, just in a more humorous fashion.

The promiscuous Stacy, Lea Thompson, is afraid of getting Aids or an STD and decides it's time she cleans up her lifestyle. She drags her best friends Melissa, Victoria Jackson, with her to a singles health spa in hopes of finding a clean, perfect guy. Melissa, who's looking for love and not just a sex partner, hopes to find her Prince Charming. A struggling musician named Nick, Stephen Shellen, catches Stacy's eye. Melissa bonds with a nice staff member at the spa named Jamie, Jerry Levine, aka Styles from Teen Wolf. All the while, the two try to avoid the advances of The Vin Man, Andrew Dice Clay, an obnoxious guest who is looking for one night stands.

I like it when the roles are reversed and women play the parts that are usually written for men. That being said, this isn't a great movie. It is harmless enough and has some laughs, but it's not incredibly memorable. The cast is pretty likable with Clay stealing most of his scenes. This was the first time he was billed as Andrew Dice Clay, and the role seems tailor suited for him.

Casual Sex? is a good afternoon time killer.

It's available on dvd.
