Coldblooded

A couple of weeks back, I took a look at some of the forgotten films of the late John Hurt. One of those was Love And Death On Long Island in which he starred with Jason Priestley. I always felt that Priestley had an interesting career after Beverly Hills 90210 ended. Instead of capitalizing on his looks and tv fame and taking a more mainstream route to the big screen, Priestley opted for more daring and original independent films. Maybe he learned that this was the best route for him after the failure Calendar Girl. One of his more interesting choices was 1995's Coldblooded.

Priestley stars as Cosmo, a somewhat dim and emotionless delivery boy for a mob boss, Robert Loggia. When the mobster decides to promote Cosmo to being a hitman, Cosmo is reluctant, even though he has a real gift at killing. He even impresses his mentor, Peter Riegert. But when he falls for a yoga instructor, Kimberly Williams, Cosmo must figure out a way to get out of his profession.

This is a very funny flick and is Priestley's best performance. He brings an idiot savant like quality to the character of Cosmo that really works. Priestley could have easily coasted on his good looks, but instead turns in a vanity free performance. Riegert is also good as his burnt out, smart assed trainer. There's also some great cameo's from Janeane Garofalo and Michael J. Fox, who also served as one of the producer's.

Sadly, this terrific black comedy isn't available on dvd or blu ray.
