You know how with some musicians that there are era's or decades of their music you prefer over others? I think directors are like that as well. Take for instance Jonathan Demme. I like most of his work, but if I had to pick my favorite era of his it would be the mid to late 80's era. His films during this time had a fun, punk like feel to them that he seemed to have lost once the 90's hit. I think a lot of that had to do with him winning the Oscar for Silence Of The Lambs. Maybe he felt that he needed to make more serious minded films once he had that statuette. So, for the next couple of posts, I thought I would look back at some of those movies. First up is 1988's Married To The Mob.

Tired of living the life of a mob wife, Angela de Marco, Michelle Pfeiffer, see's her out when her husband, Alec Baldwin, is rubbed out by his mob boss Tony "The Tiger" Russo, Dean Stockwell, when he is caught fooling around with his mistress. Angela tries to start a new life for her and her family away from the mob ties, but Tony, who has always had designs on her, tracks her down. Things get even more complicated for her when an undercover FBI agent, Matthew Modine, who has been tracking Tony, and Tony's jealous wife, Mercedes Ruehl, get thrown in the mix.

Part gangster flick, part screwball farce, Married To The Mob works on so many levels. Demme's hip directing style is aided by a game cast. Everybody brings their A game. Stockwell even earned an Oscar nom. Demme has also assembled a terrific soundtrack of 80's classics and mafia style standards to aid with the proceedings.

Married To The Mob is a fun ride.

It's available on dvd and blu ray.
