Chasers

I thought I would wrap up my look back at the later films directed by Dennis Hopper with his last effort, 1994's Chasers.

Two Navy shore patrolmen, Tom Berenger and William McNamara, must escort a beautiful, female prisoner, Erika Eleniak, to base. Berenger is a gruff, by the books Navy lifer, while McNamara is a slacker, con artist, and the two are constantly butting heads. Eleniak uses this, plus her sexuality, to repeatedly escape from the them.

Definitely no award winner, but Chasers is a lot of fun. It's nice to see Hopper tackle a comedy, and this feels like it was his most relaxed as a director. I've said this in past posts, and I'll say it again, Berenger is a good, comedic actor, and this is a nice showcase to prove my point. Eleniak is also quite good in a fun and sexy performance. McNamara struggles some however. I think they should have went with a stronger actor in the role. He comes off unlikable. And, as with a lot of his movies, Hopper has a great cast rounding out the supporting roles. Crispin Glover, Marilu Henner, Gary Busey, Frederic Forrest, Seymour Cassel, Dean Stockwell, and even Hopper himself, turn in some terrific cameo's.

Chasers is a lot of fun and a great final movie for the filmmaker Hopper.

It's available on dvd.
