Back in the late 70's and early 80's, there was a spat of comedies released about unfaithful couples. And Shirley MacLaine was the poster child for them. In 1980 alone, she starred in two of them, A Change Of Seasons and today's feature, Loving Couples.

MacLaine stars as a successful doctor whose marriage to surgeon, James Coburn, has grown stale. She starts up an affair with one of her patients, Stephen Collins. When Coburn gets wind of this from Collins' girlfriend, Susan Sarandon, the two decide that what's good for the goose is good for the gander and start up their own affair.

The cast is top notch. Sadly though, the writing, which has a sitcom feel to it, is far below the casts talents. But they do try their hardest to make the material work. There are a few clever moments, but sadly these are few and far between.

A lot of these infidelity comedies tried hard to be the next Bob & Carol &Ted & Alice, but for the most part paled in comparison.
