Director Alan J. Pakula has helmed many classics and hit films in his career. All The President's Men, Klute, and Sophie's Choice to name just a few. And like most director's Pakula has had some films that have slipped thru the cracks. Last night I revisited one of those, 1986's Dream Lover.

Not to be confused with the James Spader thriller I posted about a ew weeks back, this Dream Lover stars Kristy McNichol as a musician who is attacked in her apartment. She murders the assailant but can't shake the fear she felt causing her to have nightmares and insomnia. To get a grip on this she enlists the aid of a sleep study specialist, Ben Masters. Just when the two think they have conquered her demons, some darker thoughts begin to rise.

I haven't seen this movie since it was released back in the 80's, and I didn't really remember anything about it. On this second viewing decades later I really appreciate. Pakula has made a smart thriller with a deliberate slow pace that works in it's favor. I was also reminded of what a terrific actress McNichol was. She carries this film and tackles some heavily dramatic scenes like a pro. Masters is quite good as well. It's rare to see him play the good guy, and he's terrific at it.

Dream Lover is a smart thriller and a nice showcase for McNichol.
It's available on dvd thru Warner Archive.
