There's no denying that Blake Edwards is a legend in the film world. But even a legend can have the occasional flop. After his film Darling Lili, a movie which was re-edited by the studio, tanked at the box office, Edwards decided to give the Hollywood brass the middle finger and wrote and directed 1981's S.O.B.

After the most successful producer in Hollywood, Richard Mulligan, has his first big bomb at the box office, he decides to reshoot it and change it from a PG rated drama to an an X rated skin flick. He has a hard time convincing anyone to see his vision, especially his soon to be ex wife, Julie Andrews, the star of the picture who is best known for more family friendly fare.

This is a very dark, but funny flick that will probably always been known as the film where Julie Andrews exposes her Mary Poppins. And as lovely as they are, this shouldn't be the only selling point. Edwards has assembled a top notch cast that includes William Holden, in his final role, Larry Hagman, Shelly Winters, Robert Vaughn, Loretta Switt, Robert Webber, and Robert Preston who steal every scene he is in.

S.O.B. isn't the best Edwards film, but it is really funny and a scathing look at the darkside of Tinseltown.

It's available on dvd and blu ray thru Warner Archive.
